OUR FLAG FLIES IN WASHINGTON

2009 - Master Artist - Dot Bardarson

This mural commemorates Alaska's January 3rd, 1959 admission into the Union as the 49th of the United States.  It depicts the Alaska Flag, which was designed
by Seward artist, Benny Benson, a young, native resident of the Jessie Lee Home for Children.  John Ben "Benny" Benson was 13, a 7th grade orphan at the mission school in Seward. when he created the flag for the Territory of Alaka in 1927.  He entered a contest, arranged by Alaska Territorial Governor, George Parks, for children in grades 7 through 12.  Entry into the Union brought big changes and opportunities for our Northern Territory.
