Seward artist, Susan Swiderski, colorfully depicts our steep mountain foot race, staged
each Fourth of July. It was first raced around 1915 as the result of a barroom bet, and now each year hundreds of runners, climbers, and Olympians ascend 3022' Mount Marathon, finishing in the heart of downtown Seward to the cheering of thousands of onlookers: family, friends and fans. Details of the race’s conception and the list of annual winners are mounted below the mural.
